CONNECTX Aggregation: Building Audiences Through Programmatic Signals

Aug 26, 2026

Programmatic advertising is generally associated with one simple objective: delivering an advertisement to the right audience. But the technical infrastructure behind programmatic advertising can also produce valuable signals that, when handled lawfully and responsibly, can help authorized organizations build and enrich audiences of interest.

At CONNECTX, we refer to this capability as Aggregation.

Aggregation combines targeting criteria and signals available through legitimate programmatic advertising transactions to create or enrich an audience consisting of advertising identifiers, such as device IDs. Depending on the jurisdiction, consent framework, advertising exchange and available inventory, these signals can include approximate location, device characteristics, operating system, language, carrier/network information and other attributes made available within the advertising ecosystem.

Importantly, the availability and lawful use of these signals varies by country, platform and consent status. CONNECTX therefore applies Aggregation only where the relevant data can lawfully be processed for the intended purpose.

Example: Combining Context and Location

Consider a fictional authorized client that wants to identify an audience associated with a particular subject—for example, cryptocurrency.

Instead of simply targeting a broad demographic category, the client could create a highly specific whitelist of cryptocurrency-related websites and apps that contain programmatic advertising inventory.

A campaign can then attempt to deliver advertisements exclusively within that selected environment.

This contextual targeting can be combined with location criteria. For example, the campaign could be limited to a particular city, district, event area or other permitted geographic zone.

Example Combining Context and Location

The result is a much more narrowly defined audience:

Relevant digital environment + relevant location + successful programmatic interaction.

Where the applicable advertising infrastructure provides an eligible advertising identifier, those signals can contribute to an aggregated audience for subsequent analysis or permitted campaign activity.

The crypto example is intentionally simple. Depending on the project and legal basis, the same principle can be applied to many other contextual environments.

Starting With Device IDs of Interest

Aggregation can also work in the opposite direction.

Imagine that an authorized client already possesses a lawful set of advertising/device identifiers of interest. Rather than trying to discover a new audience from contextual criteria, CONNECTX can support a programmatic campaign designed to reach eligible identifiers from that existing audience.

If a particular identifier is addressable through participating advertising inventory and an advertisement can actually be delivered, the resulting advertising transaction may expose additional signals made available by the relevant exchange or publisher.

This can help answer questions such as: Is the identifier still active and addressable within the programmatic ecosystem? What permitted attributes are associated with the advertising opportunity? Can these signals lawfully enrich the existing dataset?

The precise information available varies considerably between publishers, SSPs, exchanges, devices, operating systems, consent regimes and jurisdictions.

Why We Call It Aggregation

A single programmatic signal usually says relatively little.

The value comes from combining multiple lawful observations and criteria.

A device identifier may appear within a particular contextual environment. A permitted location signal may provide additional relevance. Device or network characteristics may provide another layer. Repeated eligible observations can, where lawful, contribute further information.

Why We Call It Aggregation

Context + location + advertising identifier + permitted bidstream attributes = a more useful audience dataset.

This process of bringing permitted signals together is what CONNECTX calls Aggregation.

It can be used both to construct audiences from defined criteria and to enrich an existing set of identifiers.

No Secret SDK Deployment Required

An important distinction is how the underlying signals are obtained.

CONNECTX Aggregation does not depend on secretly installing an SDK inside third-party applications. Instead, it uses signals legitimately exposed through participating programmatic advertising infrastructure when an advertising opportunity exists.

This distinction matters.

Publishers and applications around the world use advertising technology to monetize inventory. When an eligible ad opportunity occurs, information necessary to evaluate and deliver that advertisement may be transmitted through the advertising supply chain, subject to the publisher’s configuration, user consent, applicable privacy rules and contractual restrictions.

CONNECTX works with this existing advertising infrastructure rather than covertly embedding surveillance technology into third-party applications.

Privacy and Compliance by Design

Aggregation should not be confused with unrestricted access to personal information.

The presence of an advertising opportunity does not automatically make every available data point lawful to collect, retain, combine or reuse. Privacy legislation—including the GDPR and comparable national frameworks—can impose requirements concerning consent, legal basis, purpose limitation, data minimization, retention and the treatment of advertising identifiers as personal or pseudonymous data.

For this reason, CONNECTX evaluates Aggregation projects according to the applicable jurisdiction, data source, intended purpose and authorization of the client.

The objective is straightforward: use the legitimate technical capabilities of the programmatic advertising ecosystem without circumventing privacy controls or relying on covert data collection methods.

From Advertising Infrastructure to Actionable Intelligence

Programmatic advertising infrastructure covers an enormous part of the open internet. Every day, websites, apps and connected devices generate advertising opportunities that are evaluated in fractions of a second.

For most advertisers, that infrastructure exists simply to decide whether an advertisement should be shown.

For specialized and properly authorized organizations, however, the same infrastructure can—with appropriate legal safeguards—provide another capability: Aggregation.

By combining contextual whitelisting, geographic targeting, existing advertising identifiers and permitted programmatic signals, CONNECTX can help clients transform isolated identifiers into more structured audiences of interest.

Not by secretly accessing a device.

Not by covertly installing software.

But by responsibly using signals available through the legitimate programmatic advertising ecosystem.

CONNECTX Aggregation — turning permitted programmatic signals into structured audiences.
